How Etsy Offsite Ads affect your profit
For the same order, an attributed ad fee comes straight out of what you keep. Compare the order with and without it before deciding your price.
Start with attribution, then choose the rate
Participation does not mean every order pays an Offsite Ads fee. A purchase within 30 days of an Offsite Ad click can be attributed; separate orders in that window may each count. If the final click is through an Etsy Ad, only the Etsy Ads fee applies. Check the attributed order in your shop rather than treating every buyer from a search engine as an ad sale. Etsy's attribution explanation.
- No attributed Offsite Ads fee: use the “No Offsite Ads fee” option for this calculation.
- 15% attributed order: shops that have always stayed below $10,000 in any consecutive 365-day period use this rate and can opt out of the program.
- 12% attributed order: after qualifying, the lower rate starts on the first day of the following month and lasts for the shop's lifetime. Participation becomes required upon reaching the threshold, even if later sales fall.
The threshold is a shop-history test, not the value of this order or the current calendar year's sales. Use the rate shown for your shop. Our calculator does not determine eligibility.
A $100 order, with all inputs shown
This hypothetical domestic order has a $100 item, $0 charged shipping, $0 gift wrap, $6 buyer sales tax, a $40 product cost and $5 actual shipping cost. Allocate one $0.20 listing cost. Packaging, other ads and other costs are $0. Those are example inputs, not a claim about a typical seller's margin.
Revenue: $100. Buyer tax is not money you keep.
Transaction: $100 × 6.5% = $6.50
Payment processing: $106 × 3% + $0.25 = $3.43
Base fees: $6.50 + $3.43 + $0.20 listing = $10.13
Profit before Offsite Ads: $100 − $10.13 − $45 = $44.87
| Order scenario | Offsite fee | Total fees | Net profit |
|---|---|---|---|
| No Offsite Ads fee | $0.00 | $10.13 | $44.87 |
| 15% attributed | $15.00 | $25.13 | $29.87 |
| 12% attributed | $12.00 | $22.13 | $32.87 |
A $15 ad fee is 15% of the revenue, but removes 33.43% of the original $44.87 profit. Costs stay the same. This is why a seemingly affordable ad percentage can make a meaningful difference to the amount left for your business.
For a US seller, the transaction and Offsite Ads bases exclude buyer sales tax. Processing includes it. If tax on this example rises from $6 to $8, processing rises by $0.06; revenue, transaction and Offsite fees stay the same. Charged shipping and gift wrap, however, add to revenue and all three fee bases. See the rules and formulas.
What the $100 per-order cap changes
On a $1,000 fee base, 15% would be $150 and 12% would be $120. Both are capped at $100 for that order. The cap applies to the Offsite Ads component alone; it does not cap the transaction fee, processing fee or total Etsy fees.
The unrounded percentage reaches $100 at about $666.67 of revenue at 15%, or $833.33 at 12%. Whole-cent rounding can reach a displayed $100 a cent earlier. The calculator rounds each component and enforces the cap; real invoice adjustments may differ.
Use the result to check a price, not predict sales
- Enter your actual sale price after discounts. Add shipping and gift wrap charged to the buyer separately.
- Include materials or purchase cost, direct labor, shipping and packaging. Allocate any seller-fee taxes, subscription or overhead you want covered.
- Calculate once without an Offsite Ads fee, then choose your shop's attributed rate. Keep every other input fixed to see the profit difference.
- If the attributed order falls below the profit you need, try a different item price or cost. Check both scenarios again before committing to the listing.
Keep any allocated Etsy Ads spend in “Other ad cost.” Do not enter the calculated Offsite Ads fee there again. Likewise, count listing and renewal costs only once. For a $0.60 listing allocation instead of $0.20, every scenario above loses another $0.40 of profit.
This comparison does not predict whether an ad brought an extra sale, future sales volume, returns or demand at a higher price. Profit per order and the value of the advertising program are different questions.
